Carlos Aponte for Anna Sui

-
WYRT invited noted fashion illustrator Carlos Aponte to cover the Anna Sui fashion show during New York Fashion Week at Lincoln Center this season.  He created his signature tape illustration which he is famous for to capture and interpret Anna Suis design.

Seeing the patterns, textures, and dimensions (approx 20 X 24) of his tape illustrations up close, exponentially adds to the viewers experience.  The vesica piscis print, juxtaposed with the black tape and white background, while carefully delegating the use of positive and negative space is executed very precisely, but at the same time with a seemingly effortless touch.

Heres an example of how Aponte applies the masking tape.

Carlos say, Fashion and fashion illustration should be about the element of surprise, the new. One of the things that I learned from Antonio Lopez, my mentor during the eighties, was to always try something new, something different.  [BPL]

Aponte recently showcased his artwork in Fashion Illustration: A Contemporary Look in 2012 at the Brooklyn Library.  Previous exhibitions include “Fashion Illustration: A Visual Poetry” at the Gallery Hanahou in 2011 and “The Line of Fashion” at the Society of Illustrators in 2009.  His client list includes British GQ, Food & Wine, and Elle, among others.
